Tutoring & Learning Support

Learning Support That Starts With the Learner

Sometimes a learner doesn’t need more worksheets, more homework, or someone telling them to “try harder.”

Sometimes they need someone to discover where learning is getting stuck—and teach it differently.

At Adapt Scholar, our specialized tutoring and learning support begins with the individual. We look at strengths, current skills, learning needs, interests, and goals to create instruction that is meaningful, supportive, and designed to build greater independence.

Whether your learner needs help understanding what they read, organizing a long-term assignment, developing math confidence, strengthening English academic language, or finding an approach that works better at home, we meet learners where they are and help them move forward.

The goal isn’t simply getting through today’s assignment.

It’s helping learners develop skills they can carry into tomorrow.

Special Education Learning Support

When “more practice” isn’t enough.

Families of children with learning differences often know this experience well: your child works hard, you work hard, and yet something still isn’t clicking.

Specialized learning support looks beneath the assignment.

A student struggling with written work, for example, may understand the subject beautifully when talking about it but struggle to organize thoughts on paper. Another learner may understand directions when they are demonstrated visually but become overwhelmed by several verbal instructions given at once.

Instead of assuming every learner needs the same solution, we ask:

What can this learner already do? Where is the difficulty occurring? What support makes the difference?

Instruction may include explicit teaching, modeling, visual supports, guided practice, repetition, scaffolded tasks, and strategies that gradually move the learner toward greater independence.

For families who choose to share them, existing IEP or 504 information, school reports, work samples, and family observations can also help us better understand the learner’s educational needs.

Reading & Writing Support

Helping learners find meaning in words—and confidence in their own voice.

Reading is much more than saying the words on a page, and writing is much more than putting sentences on paper.

A child may read fluently but struggle to explain what was read. Another may have wonderful ideas but stare at a blank page because they don’t know how to begin.

Our individualized reading and writing support can address skills such as foundational reading, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, written expression, sentence and paragraph development, organization, and strategies for approaching increasingly complex text.

We break larger skills into manageable steps, model the thinking process, practice together, and gradually help learners take ownership.

Because sometimes the most important change isn’t simply reading another paragraph.

It’s hearing a learner say:

“I know what to do when I get stuck.”

Math Learning Support

Making math understandable—not just getting the answer.

For some learners, math can quickly become a source of frustration.

They may memorize a procedure one day and forget it the next. They may understand a concept with objects or pictures but become confused when it appears as numbers and symbols. Others can calculate accurately but struggle with word problems or multi-step directions.

Our math support focuses on helping learners understand the why behind the process, not simply memorize another set of steps.

Instruction can include visual models, explicit demonstrations, real-world examples, mathematical vocabulary, guided practice, problem-solving strategies, and opportunities to explain thinking in different ways.

The goal is not simply:

“Did you get the right answer?”

We also want learners to understand:

“How did you get there—and what can you try next time?”

Executive Function Support

When they know what to do—but can’t seem to get started.

This can be one of the most frustrating situations for families.

Your child understands the assignment.

They have the ability.

You’ve reminded them several times.

And an hour later…the assignment still hasn’t started.

The challenge may involve executive-function skills rather than understanding the academic content.

We help learners develop practical strategies for planning, organization, working memory, task initiation, time management, flexible thinking, self-monitoring, and goal setting.

Instead of repeatedly telling a learner to “get organized,” we can explicitly teach what organization looks like:

What needs to be done? → What comes first? → What do I need? → How long might it take? → How will I know I’m finished?

With practice and appropriate supports, the adult can gradually step back while the learner takes greater ownership.

That’s an important goal of executive-function support:

Not creating dependence on another reminder—but developing a system the learner can eventually use independently.

ELL & Multilingual Learner Support

Building English while honoring what a learner already knows.

A multilingual learner may understand much more than they can currently express in English.

Imagine a student who understands the science concept being discussed but doesn’t yet have the academic vocabulary to explain the answer. The difficulty isn’t necessarily understanding science—it may be finding the language needed to demonstrate that understanding.

Our support for English Language Learners (ELLs) and multilingual learners connects language development with meaningful academic learning.

Instruction may incorporate visual supports, explicit vocabulary instruction, modeling, sentence frames, background knowledge, oral language practice, comprehension checks, and multiple opportunities to demonstrate understanding.

Most importantly, we view multilingualism as an asset.

The goal isn’t to erase the language and experiences a learner brings with them. It is to build upon those strengths while expanding the learner’s ability to communicate, participate, and succeed academically in English.

Homeschool Learning Support

You don’t have to figure out every learning challenge alone.

Homeschooling gives families tremendous flexibility—but that flexibility can also come with difficult questions.

Is my child making enough progress?

Why isn’t this curriculum working?

Should we keep practicing this skill or try another approach?

How do I teach this differently?

What if my child is working at different levels in different subjects?

Adapt Scholar can partner with homeschool families who want individualized educational support without giving up the flexibility and values that led them to homeschool.

Support may include academic instruction, curriculum adaptation, skill-gap intervention, executive-function strategies, learning routines, progress monitoring, and consultation with parents.

For example, a learner might be ready for advanced science content but need reading material presented at a different instructional level. Rather than holding back the learner’s curiosity, we can explore ways to make the content accessible while continuing to develop the underlying reading skills.

Homeschooling doesn’t have to mean making every educational decision by yourself.

Sometimes a knowledgeable educational partner can help families see both where a learner is now and where to go next.

10 Years of Special Education Experience

With over 10 years of experience in public-school special education, I have dedicated my career to supporting students with diverse learning needs from the early elementary years through high school. Throughout my experience, I have worked closely with students, families, teachers, administrators, and support professionals to create inclusive, supportive, and meaningful educational experiences.

My work in special education has allowed me to support students with a wide range of academic, behavioral, social-emotional, and developmental needs. I believe every student has unique strengths and abilities, and I am committed to identifying those strengths while providing the individualized support, encouragement, and resources students need to succeed.

Over the course of my career, I have developed experience with individualized education programs (IEPs), student-centered instruction, behavior support, accommodations and modifications, progress monitoring, collaboration with families and multidisciplinary teams, and transition planning. Working across grade levels has given me a broad understanding of how students’ needs change as they grow and how important consistency and communication are throughout their educational journey.

Tutor/Educator Lynn G.

From the early years of building foundational academic and social skills to helping high school students prepare for graduation, employment, independence, and life beyond school, my goal has always been to help students become confident learners and advocates for themselves.

After a decade in public-school special education, I remain passionate about equity, inclusion, and ensuring that every student has the opportunity to learn, grow, and reach their full potential.
